Understanding Your Benefits

Services that are always considered medical are:

  • Tests

  • Labs

  • Imaging

  • Exams for specific conditions or injuries

We know insurance can be confusing, and we're here to help!

Services our practice provides may be designated Routine or Medical. In some cases, like comprehensive eye health exams, the nature of a service can only be determined during an examination. If you have a medical condition that affects the health of your eyes and/or your vision, your doctor will determine during your visit whether your exam meets the requirements of a routine (preventative care) service or a medical service, and we will bill your medical or vision insurance accordingly.

Why are these services necessary?

If your doctor notices something out of the ordinary in your eyes, it’s important to examine it in more depth. Sometimes diseases of the eye impact your vision in ways that can be corrected. Sometimes these diseases are degenerative and their progress can be slowed with treatment and monitoring. Sometimes brain or vascular diseases that have not yet developed noticeable symptoms can be detected in your eyes.

We encourage you to ask questions if you don’t understand the purpose of a service. You can always decline any service or test we recommend.

If you are unsure whether a service is covered under your plan, or whether your plan’s deductible has been met, contact your insurance before your visit. Our clinic staff will check your insurance, but your insurance may not always provide us with accurate information; it is best to get an answer directly from your carrier.

We strive to be completely transparent with our patients. If you have questions during your visit about the nature of your exam, or about any other services or procedures we provide, ask your doctor or the clinic staff.

Services that may be considered either routine or medical are:

  • Comprehensive eye health exams

  • Refractions (prescription determination)
